Phonics with Robot Reg (North Yorkshire)

Ad| I was kindly invited along by Alice to one of her sessions with my son Leo so I could give my feedback to share with me readers. We also arranged for me to publish a blog write up to give you a good insight of what to expect from these sessions.

Leo was 27 months when we attended. So we tried out the minis session which is recommended for ages 12 months-30 months. There is also a preschool session for 2.5-4 year olds. The concept is very similar just with more advanced play and learning styles.

The sessions start of with a nice song to introduce everyone. Then Robot Reg makes an appearance. This helped Leo relax as being his first session he was a bit unsure but he soon got into it with all the fun playtime elements.

The way Robot Reg is brought into the session is through him hiding in a bag, everyone counts to 3, then shouts for him, and he pops his hand out and waves! Then with a bit more encouragement he comes out of the bag fully! Robot Reg is a soft toy of course, but Alice was full of enthusiasm and bringing him to life for the kids in a childlike way that toddlers can relate to. This was a fun start getting the kids all engaged and smiling.

Each session you are introduced to a new sound. The letters in our session C and K for the sound CK. There were various games and music based activities to learn this sound. Because it was fun the children didn’t even realise they were learning! We moved our hands like we had castanets whilst singing, our actions representing the sound. Then we got to play with some small cars and a small rubber mat, I think Leo enjoyed this bit. The kids were encouraged to move their cars over, under and through the mat, as well as moving it fast and slow.

We did some dancing with Pom poms, lots of moving around and again different positional movements encouraged like shaking them above our heads or down on the floor and side to side. Leo is quite an active kid so he enjoyed this.

One thing that stood out for me was all the learning of positional words and word concepts through hands on activities and playing. I loved this as it can easily be replicated at home giving parents lots of activity ideas, and it’s a big part of language development and understanding.

Another part of the session involved getting your own teddy bear, blanket and toothbrush and the kids were encouraged to brush the bears teeth, wrap him up and then rock the teddy bear and sing a nursery rhyme. How lovely! Robot Reg event made an appearance and he got a high five off him!

Again lots of learning of everyday tasks as well as motor skills, speaking and listening development.

And of course it wouldn’t be a toddler session without some disco lights, musical instruments, dancing and bubbles! I’ve found this always seems to go down well with toddlers.

At the very end of the session is some story time where there’s lots of books to choose from and swap them as you please. This was lovely time reading with Leo and he enjoyed discussing the books with me and looking at pictures. Alice was very involved too going round talking with the children about their books to encourage conversation.

Summary-I think if you are looking for a session with lots of speaking and language development as well as motor skills development, then these session are great as there’s lots of it and a good mix of activities to make it fun. Everything in the session covers elements from the EYFS framework (the curriculum for 0-5 year olds).

Here is the current timetable (as of October 24);

Alice also offers three week trials at £7 per session so you can try a few sessions before committing to a term. For more information, current timetables and booking click here
